The Missing Stair (Quick Read)
Full version: The Missing Stair: Why Communities Work Around a Known Problem Instead of Fixing It
A missing stair is a person a community works around instead of addressing.
The term comes from a 2012 post by Cliff Pervocracy, writing about the kink community and a man everyone knew was dangerous. The analogy is a house where a step is missing from an unlit staircase and everyone who lives there just remembers to jump.
The whisper network is genuinely protective, and that is the problem.
Warning newcomers makes the situation survivable. A survivable situation does not generate the pressure required to fix anything. Every workaround that functions is one more reason the stair stays missing.
Then the blame moves.
Once the workaround is standard, safety depends on individual vigilance, so anyone who gets hurt is understood to have failed to be vigilant. She was told. Everyone knows about him.
Nobody fixes it because the costs are lopsided.
A warning takes thirty seconds and creates no conflict. Removing an established member takes a confrontation, a determination of what happened, a decision, and the willingness to be the one who did it. Missing stairs are also usually load-bearing, which supplies fair-sounding reasons for indefinite delay.
This is not the opposite of DARVO. It is the same event from another angle.
Years of accommodation train a community to generate reasons the problem is not urgent. Those same reasons are ready when the accused reverses the roles. The community does not turn hostile. It keeps doing what it was already doing, with new language.
The signal to watch is not the accusation.
It is what happens when someone asks for a process. If the whisper network is the process, you now know what protection exists.
