ADHD Therapy for Adults

ADHD in adults is chronically misunderstood — especially in queer and late-diagnosed adults who masked for decades. This practice is neurodivergent-led, which means your therapist isn't just affirming, they get it from the inside.

What is ADHD in adults?

ADHD isn't a focus problem — it's a regulation problem. Executive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD), and time blindness are all part of the picture. For adults, especially those diagnosed later in life, ADHD often looks less like a hyperactive kid and more like a person who is exhausted from compensating.

Emotional dysregulation and RSD — the intense, often overwhelming fear of rejection or criticism — are among the most painful and least-discussed aspects of adult ADHD. They can wreck relationships, careers, and self-worth. And they're rarely addressed in the "try a planner" advice that passes for ADHD support.

ADHD also presents very differently in women, AFAB adults, and queer people. The research base has historically centered white, cisgender boys — which means many adults spent years being told they were "too sensitive," "scattered," or "not trying hard enough" before anyone looked closer. Late diagnosis is common, and it comes with its own grief.

Why it matters for queer & neurodivergent folx

Queerness and ADHD intersect in ways that most therapists aren't trained to see. Masking — the exhausting performance of neurotypicality — is something many queer people know intimately from a different angle: performing straightness, performing gender conformity, performing "normal." When you're doing both at once, burnout isn't a risk, it's a certainty.

Late diagnosis after a lifetime of "you're so smart but you just need to apply yourself" carries a specific kind of grief. There's anger at the systems that missed you, relief at finally having language for your experience, and the slow work of untangling shame from identity. This practice holds space for all of it.

This is also a practice that doesn't require you to educate your therapist. The neurodivergent-led model means you can spend your session on your actual life — not explaining why the standard advice doesn't work for your brain.

How I work with ADHD

Buddhist psychology & impermanence

ADHD brains often struggle with the weight of past failures and future catastrophizing. Buddhist psychology offers tools for working with the present moment — not as a productivity hack, but as a genuine shift in relationship to time, self, and experience.

Somatic awareness for dysregulation

Emotional dysregulation and RSD live in the body before they reach the mind. Somatic awareness helps you recognize the early signals — the chest tightening, the shutdown, the spiral — and build capacity to work with them rather than be swept away.

Identity-affirming CBT

Standard CBT often pathologizes ADHD traits rather than working with them. Identity-affirming CBT starts from the premise that your brain isn't broken — and builds strategies that fit your actual neurology, values, and life.

Frequently asked questions

Do you diagnose ADHD?+

No — as an LMFT, I don't provide formal ADHD diagnoses. What I do offer is a space to explore your experience, understand how ADHD shows up in your life, and build strategies that actually work for your brain. If you need a formal evaluation, I can help you find the right resources.

Can therapy help without medication?+

Absolutely. Medication is one tool, and it's not the right fit for everyone. Therapy can help with emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitive dysphoria, executive function strategies, and the identity work that often comes with a late ADHD diagnosis — none of which medication addresses on its own.

What if I was diagnosed late?+

Late diagnosis is incredibly common, especially for queer adults, women, and AFAB folks who spent decades masking. There's often grief, anger, and relief all at once. This practice holds space for all of it — the "what if I'd known sooner" and the "now I finally understand myself."

Do you understand ADHD from the inside?+

Yes. This is a neurodivergent-led practice. Your therapist isn't just trained in ADHD — they live it. That means no subtle skepticism, no "have you tried a planner," and no having to explain why the standard advice doesn't work for your brain.
