Neurodivergent Therapist in Detroit

Detroit's neurodivergent community carries the weight of a city that's been told it's broken — and knows better. Telehealth therapy for autistic adults, late-diagnosed ADHD, and AuDHD folx in Metro Detroit who are done with deficit narratives.

Neurodivergent-Led Therapy for Detroit Clients

Love Psychotherapy is a neurodivergent-owned, queer-owned telehealth practice. Mx. Love C. Dialogos (They/Them) is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Buddhist chaplain, and AAMFT-Approved Supervisor offering strengths-based, identity-affirming care to neurodivergent clients in Detroit and across Michigan.

Detroit clients often bring a disability justice framework to therapy — they've been in community spaces that center neurodivergent identity politically, not just clinically. Therapy here often involves integrating that political identity with personal healing work.

Autism — Identity-Affirming

Autism therapy grounded in the neurodiversity paradigm. No ABA, no compliance training, no "fixing." We work with your actual experience — sensory, social, executive, and emotional.

ADHD — Emotional Dysregulation & RSD

ADHD therapy that goes beyond productivity tips. We work with emotional dysregulation, rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD), shame, and the identity wounds that accumulate before diagnosis.

AuDHD — The Intersection

The co-occurrence of autism and ADHD creates a specific experience that neither framework alone captures. AuDHD therapy holds both simultaneously — the rigidity and the impulsivity, the hyperfocus and the shutdown.

Late Diagnosis — Grief & Relief

Late diagnosis brings a complicated mix: relief at finally having language for your experience, and grief for the years you struggled without support. We work with both.

Autistic Burnout

Autistic burnout is a prolonged state of exhaustion and reduced functioning caused by chronic masking and overextension. Recovery is possible — but it requires a different kind of support than regular burnout.

Demand Avoidance / PDA Profile

The Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) profile is significantly underrecognized. Therapy uses autonomy-supportive, low-demand approaches that actually work for PDA-profile autistic adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Detroit has a strong disability justice community. How does that show up in therapy?

Detroit's disability justice organizing has created a community of neurodivergent adults who understand their experience politically as well as personally. Therapy here often involves integrating that political framework with personal healing — honoring the anger and the advocacy while also doing the internal work. I don't ask clients to leave their politics at the door.

Do you work with clients in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, or the Metro Detroit suburbs?

Yes — telehealth means location in the metro doesn't matter. Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Warren, Livonia, Pontiac — anywhere in Michigan works. Many clients in the University of Michigan community (Ann Arbor) also find their way to me through the neurodiversity research network.

I can't afford a formal autism or ADHD evaluation. Can I still do therapy?

Absolutely. A formal diagnosis is not required to work with me. Many clients are self-identified, or have a strong clinical impression from a previous provider without a formal evaluation. We can work with your lived experience and self-knowledge. If you do want a formal evaluation, I can help you navigate lower-cost options in Michigan.

What does neurodivergent-affirming therapy actually mean in practice?

It means I start from the premise that your neurology is valid — not a disorder to be corrected. We don't work toward making you more neurotypical. We work toward understanding your actual needs, building a life that fits your brain, processing the harm that came from years of being told you were wrong, and developing genuine self-knowledge and self-advocacy skills.
